Just because I have not written for so long

I did not do well in Communications last week
Prof. J was kind enough to reweigh my score
It sucks when you understand most of it
but make a huge error at the beginning of the test question.
Anyway this semester was sort of hectic
I found my first white hair 10 days ago.
Hugh, that was fun.

By the way, I really like Angel Beats theme music.

Zeitgeist

Google published its Zeitgesit 2012 list. As other episodes in the past, it recaptures the major events in the past year by going over the most popular searches on Google. Some famous people passed away. Some people just made their fame. Some events drew everyone's attention. Some others received only a few glimpse.
It is just an emotional moment to look back through the year. Time slipped so fast. Where were I a year ago? Where am I going to be in a year from now?
It has been a lonely year.

The Lost Sheep

A freshman posted a blog in which she ranted about her complaints of her current curriculum. In particular, she was very upset that she paid much more effort in her first year writing classes than some of her peers did. However, she might not be awarded with a grade that she expected simply because "the system is not fair".

This reminded me of a common phenomenon about why good people are sometimes not recognized for their contribution. In addition, they even receive blames or criticism because of the imperfections in their work. On the other hand, people who do not a damn thing can safely skirt all those blames.

So there is this story of why God does not award good people in Chinese. The gist of the story is that the greatest prize from God to good people is to let them become good people. I could not find any English version of the story, which led me to doubt its authenticity. Instead I came across the Parable of the Lost Sheep, which sort of relates to the same phenomenon that the missing sheep (the bad people) receives more attention from the shepherd than the behaving sheep (the good people). Again, there is also a Chinese saying that the baby (between two twins) who cries louder gets more breast milk from the mother. So these stories/sayings all describe a normal  behavior/social psychology in the human society. I don't think it is fair for the good people/quiet baby, but it seems to that men are simply not able to evaluate or appreciate people around them given their ability to discern active (a sheep is missing/a baby is crying) and non-active (a sheep is following the rules/a baby is not crying even though it might not be fully fed) information. Did I just write some crap?

To sum up, I think these are the limitations of humanity that we cannot get rid of as long as we are emotional creatures. So even though I do not wholeheartedly buy the argument that God awards the good people of their good character, I nevertheless think that this is the best way of dealing with it. By no means I am saying that I am a good person. I am just able to resolve a similar issue in the past month in which I did not receive many credits of my contribution whereas I became the first person to blame for a mistake. Oh well let it be. It is nowhere near the worst.

I am a lunatic

First time in DC today
It's a very interesting city
Street names are named by numbers, letters, and state names
which is so legit in the capital
Shanghai, which is not the capital city of China,
has some street names named after other provinces.
The license plates of a lot of cars from DC say
"Taxation without Representation"
reminding me of a discussion with Nam and someone else in freshman year
People really emphasize on their political liberty
but how many folks actually take it seriously enough to follow the news everyday
However, maybe that is democracy after all
(or representational democracy. I might have misused the terms here but I am too stupid to look it up)
Why should everyone be directly involved in governing?
Some are utterly disinterested
Some are largely neutral as long as their basic rights are preserved
Some may not be eligible for governing (controversial?)
So it can be a total mess if everybody has a strong opinion in politics
So am I arguing for elitism here?
Anyway that is too much tangent

A question came to mind on my way to DC
Does every question has an answer?
I think so, as wrong answers can still be classified as answers, I guess? So it is not hard to make up an answer to any question, I suppose.
So Does every question has a correct answer?
Well the tricky part is what is correctness.
Telling a white lie can be (morally) correct but (factually) wrong. So I further refined the question to be:
Does every question has a factual answer?
Then I backed off to think about the definitions of QUESTIONS and ANSWERS.
If we define a QUESTION as a statement that invokes an answer, and define an ANSWER as a statement in response to a question, the whole discussion becomes trivial. Maybe?
So after consulting the dictionaries, the two words are defined in following manners in this discussion:
Question: A statement that seeks to elicit information
Answer: A statement that contains the information requested (this definition still has the element of question, asking, and eliciting in it. In other words, it seems impossible to turn this discussion into a meaningful one)
Anyway back to the topic
Does every question has a factual answer?
To make things more messy, does every question has only a factual answer? In other words, answers that do not contain all the necessary information would not be considered as factual.
Oh well, I need a break.

===straying again===
I didn't bring my razor with me
I hope that this won't get me screwed up tomorrow
Anyway another lunatic idea
The whole notion of pipelining in processor design was so genius that I can't believe how much more efficiency of using the hardware parts we can harvest from pipelining.
Well it seems that a lot of resources in our society are not as nearly utilized to their capacity
Think about those office buildings.
They are in use between 6AM to 6PM let's say
whilst they stand idle for the rest of the day
Is there absolutely no way for us to use that space
by teleporting the office supplies out to somewhere?
One day?

So Sagittarius

So I decided to put up a picture of Pisces despite my title
It just made me a little emotional whenever I look at it
Or probably it is the soundtrack
Starless from Kenshin

The mountains will remember us

New Shangri-La TV ad - "It's in our nature"

Yes that is in our nature
I am more than willing to be the wolf
but will I get hunted down even before I get close to you?
